“The MindBody”
When you tell people about mindbody work they nod along as if to say “oh, that is nice that meditating helps her or whatever mindfulness is” but you can tell most have close to no understanding of the depths of their mind and by no fault of their own, they have never felt the force or pull of a disease to pour their heart and soul into this. When you begin though to observe your emotional states, your thought patterns, the feelings or sensations that arise in your body and your reactions to these things, you start to unlift a veil. A veil on just how conditioned society has made you to think about yourself including your parents, your friends, your extended family, your siblings, your childhood experiences, work interactions, things you watch on TV, books you read, dogma you buy into, and it can be terrifying to realize that most of what you are telling yourself is the reality you have created in your mind and thus your physiology but it might not and in fact is not true. What becomes more terrifying is investigating how through neurochemical processes highlighted by Dr. Joe Dispenza Dr. David Hanscom, Dr. Candace Pert, Dr. John Sarno, Dr. Farias, Dr. Howard Schubiner, Dr. David Hawkins, Dr. David Schechter, Dr. Jeffrey Rediger, Dr. Dan Ratner, Charlie Merrill, PT, Karden Raden, amongst so many others that the mind can directly alter biology and induce disease. Your thoughts literally create a neurochemical cascade through the peptide chain that every cell has a receptor to and ultimately when this neuropeptide binds to the receptor the cell changes it’s expression. Do this enough time the binding becomes automatic and conditioned and has the ability to change our DNA Over time thinking those same thoughts and leading life by those same feelings either allows those cells to thrive or to squander; either creating health or disease (be that physical or mental). The good part is, we can actually take back control over this neurochemical process and greatly alter our health, even inducing remission of so called incurable diseases (if you want more on this, check out Cured by Dr. Jeffrey Rediger).
Yes, those same thoughts and beliefs (which as Dr. Joe Dispenza puts so eloquently “a belief is just a thought you say to yourself over and over again”) can be changed. The tricky part is to actually observe them, tolerate them in real time over and over and actively work to change them. While acceptance is also a player in the game and ultimately surrendering to something greater than yourself, the first step is to become conscious to and tolerate these thoughts and emotions, see them for what they are, feel them the best you can to their entirety and work at either reacting with neutrality or differently in order to change that neurochemical cascade. The second step becomes during set times actively changing these patterns and can be done through a variety of means. Some of the ones I have found helpful are mindful exercise, visualization, meditation, journaling and for movement issues Dr. Farias technique. I can tell you how I have done this and continue to do so on this journey, however everyone is different so I encourage the reader to find what works best for them.
As a physician assistant, sadly I can say that none of this is taught in school despite the overwhelming scientific evidence that continues to highlight the connection between the mind and body and the capacity to heal that is documented by so many prominent authors in this field and scientists. As more and more studies come out, a paradigm shift seems to be beginning to occur where many are more open to some of these ideas but still continue to look for ways to treat symptoms rather than causes or magic bullets. While I am not saying that allopathic medicine cannot be amazingly helpful and innovative at times, it misses so much of the individual story where the root cause of disease occurs and not only that, can be healed. The medical world has an issue with the word “healed” due to liability however at this point in time, I am no longer afraid to speak the truth that full healing can occur when we set the stage correctly by altering our unconscious thoughts, cultivating new emotions, visualizing and going for our dreams, changing our behaviors and reactions to life, taking part in and accepting the moment as it is and altering our worldview. At this point I have to give an ode to Dr. Sarno who despite ostracization from the medical community, saved so many lives highlighting that the vast majority of chronic pain is rooted in emotion and the limbic system, rather than the body and this is now finally being backed by scientific research. He was unafraid to go against the grain and give so many their lives back (see Thank you Dr. Sarno) and the hope his books and this website gave me literally saved my life.
If his words are difficult to believe take a look at the work of Joe Dispenza, the books Cured by Dr. Jeffrey Rediger, The Great Pain Deception by Steve Ozanich, Spontaneous Healing by Dr. Andrew Weil, Defying the Verdict by Tamara Gurin, any of the books by Dr. David Hawkins, The Secret Language of The Body, and the work of Dr. Hanscom, Dr. Schubiner, Dr. Schechter and so many more. These are just to name a few, as there are actually endless accounts as you dive deeper into this world from every and anything; stage IV cancer to aplastic anemia to dystonia to Parkinson’s disease to Crohn’s disease to A-fib. You name it, you can probably find it, even ALS has had over 48 “spontaneous” recoveries documented by a Harvard physician. These recoveries take effort and by no means are spontaneous, but what they prove is anything is possible. This is the words I needed to hear for my story to begin.
